The manta ray, also known as hahalua, is considered a representation of wisdom. It is thought that by jumping out of the water, the manta ray shares its knowledge and experiences from under the ocean with the world above.
In Hawaii, the manta ray is one of three types of rays found, and is the only one to have a specific Hawaiian name. While other rays are referred to as hihimanu (meaning magnificent or elegant bird) because of their graceful movements similar to a bird's flight.
